Training Video Highlights
Classroom/Online Training
Overview: This project demonstrates a synchronous training option addressing common technical skill gaps, specifically data entry and maintenance in Microsoft Excel and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
Instructional Problem: The Central County School District’s Information Technology (IT) Department is migrating to a new Student Information System (SIS) to track student information such as attendance, grades, and behavioral issues. By using this new system, the district plans to save time and money by going digital. Previously, all of this information was tracked by paper files, stored in office filing cabinets.
Target Audience: In order to use the new SIS, all admin staff in the district will need to know basic Excel functionality, but the target audience is older (50+) with a wide variety of education and no experience using Excel.

Learning Outcomes
Employees will be proficient in entering and editing data in the Client’s new SIS, increasing productivity and decreasing clerical errors. They will also be able to quickly and efficiently retrieve stored information on demand, resulting in a better customer service experience. Admin staff will be trained on policies and procedures designed to safeguard sensitive digital information, reducing the chances of privacy violations that could result in legal action.
Instructional Design & Methodology
Analysis is always the most important aspect of instructional design. I’ve included the Training Needs Analysis just below this section, but assessing the skill gap was a critical part of this training development process. When designing this training, I employed Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction (FPI) as a guiding framework to ensure performance-based learning:
1. Task-Centered Training
2. Activate Prior Knowledge
3. Demonstrate the Skill (Trainer)
4. Apply the Skill (Learners)
5. Integrate Skill into Workflow
The training was designed with a hands-on (Task-Centered) performance assessment in mind. The trainer narratively connects physical filing system concepts to digital file storage (Activate) and proceeds to explain and Demonstrate the skills through screen sharing. The learners then Apply the skills during a short hands-on assessment. Through follow-up evaluations with supervisors, we will assess how well the learners have Integrated the new skills into their daily work. I have included the Training Needs Analysis, Training Outline and a condensed version of the Zoom training event below.
